Maharajas Express

                                           VS

Venice Simplon Orient Express

Touted as the most luxurious tourist train in India, Maharajas’ Express is often compared to the Venice Simplon Orient Express owing to its state of the art facilities and impeccable services. While it's been only two years to the inception of Maharajas’ Express rail journey, Venice Simplon Orient Express is chugging its course from last 30 years. But when it comes to facilities & services, both these trains can give run over money to each other. In this post, I will list some points that will persuade you to choose your best bet.

Unlike Venice Simplon Orient Express, Maharajas’ Express has a different assortment of room categories available such as Deluxe Cabins, Junior Suites, Suites and a Presidential Suite that spans  over entire carriage.

Both Maharajas’ Express and Venice Simplon Orient Express serves both a la carte and Table d'hôte meals to its passengers. However, the food served on board Maharajas’ Express is wholly solely dominated by the French cuisines, while Maharajas’ Express serves multi-cuisine delicacies on the platter of the guests.

One of the 5 journeys on board Maharajas’ Express- ‘Indian Splendor’-involves meeting with the royal family of Balasinor. No such experience is available in any of the journeys offered by the Venice Simplon Orient Express.

The cost factor is the biggest advantage of the Maharajas’ Express train journey over Venice Simplon Orient Express. While an 8 days and 7 night’s journey on board Maharajas’ Express costs around $5560 per person night, the same on board Venice Simplon Orient Express will cost you about £11,000.

Last but not the least, there is Jaipur often referred to as the ‘Pink City’. The city has been entitled so due to the terracotta buildings painted in pink color to welcome the advent of King Edward in 1876. The destinations of this deluxe rail journey are diverse and present a different flavor and color of India.

Delhi-

Raj Ghat Delhi
The once in a lifetime journey of Indian Panorama begins from the splendid capital of Delhi. Various invaders had invaded the city from time to time and thus left their footprints in the form of monuments, forts, temples and mosques. Even today also, Delhi is the dwelling of people from diverse castes, creeds and religions. Red Fort, India Gate, Jama Masjid, Raj Ghat, Lodhi Garden, Humayun’s Tomb etc. are just not the prime attractions of the city, but silently tells the saga of various periods in the history of the country. Along with the past reminiscent, the city of Delhi has turned into a rapidly developing commercial and entertainment hub. The mushrooming of shopping malls, street markets, night clubs and multi-specialty food corners mark a new era of modern life in the city of Delhi.

Jaipur-

Amer Fort
Amer Fort - Jaipur
Drenched in the royal memory of the yore, the ‘pink city’ Jaipur is the next destination of Indian Panorama. Like various other parts of the country, Jaipur also has many folklores to tell to its visitors. The name ‘pink city’ has been given to Jaipur for the pinkish hue created by the scattering of pink colored buildings in the city. Though Rajputana influence is more visible in Jaipur, but a fine expression of Mughal art and architecture can also be witnessed there. Those who want to experience classical India, Jaipur is probably one of the best options for them. Every fort and palace in Jaipur is fine examples of human genius and of architecture. Moreover, the art and music of the place also has made a benchmark in the international spectrum.

Ranthambore-

Ranthambore National Park
To add a touch of adventure, the Indian Panorama chugs to Ranthambore, the land of the valorous Indian wild cats in Rajasthan. Seeing these majestic predators in their natural habitat excites the senses and offers a spine shivering experience. Apart from the valiant tigers, the Ranthambore National Park is also a dwelling of the colorful species of birds, diverse wild animals and rarest species of plants and trees. A dream destination for the wildlife photographers, Ranthambore certainly mounts in the list of best wildlife destinations in India.

Fatehpur Sikri-

princely India Fatehpur Sikri
Declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Fatehpur Sikri is the place that speaks of much about the Mughal era in India. Mughal Emperor Akbar built this city in the second half of the 16th century and also lived there for around 12 years. All the temples, monuments and mosques in this city of Akbar reflect a uniformity of architecture. The evolution of Indian town planning, especially at Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) was being greatly influenced by the form and layout of Fatehpur Sikri. The inner citadel of this city of victory has immaculately preserved manmade wonders like Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Panch Mahal, Buland Darwaza, the tomb of Saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, and the Jama Masjid.

Agra-

Taj Mahal - Agra
Situated in the Indian state of Utter Pradesh, Agra is crowned with the most majestic monument of love, the Taj Mahal. Counted as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal bears witness to the immortal love of a king for his beloved queen. The architectural brilliance of Taj Mahal can be seen in its medley of white domed marble mausoleum, water fountains and its manicured gardens. Apart from this white maiden of love, Agra is dotted with other forts and palaces among which Agra Fort, Baby Taj, Chini ka Rauza and Ram Bagh are of prime importance.

Gwalior-

Gwalior Fort - Gwalior
Crossing the hills and plains of India, the Maharajas’ Express reaches Gwalior, it next destination. The city has a history as fascinating as its monuments and forts. With more than a century old history, Gwalior is said to be named after the saint Gwalipa who cured the king from a deadly disease. With its sandstone mosques, rock cut temples and fabulous statues, Gwalior upkeeps its glorious tradition of the past. The monuments built in the yester years by the royal people create a mesmerizing hue in the city.

Orcha-
Chaturbhuj Temple - Orchha
It is said that every corner of India offers a different feel and charm and Orcha in Madhya Pradesh is a silent bearer of this saying. It is a small town dwelling in the banks of the river Betwa and offers a natural ménage to the travelers. The temples and palaces in Orcha reflect the traditions, customs, art and culture of the Bundela dynasty who established it as their capital. Though sand of time has brought many changes in this city, still its treasure trove is full of precious jewels to offer to its visitors.

Khajuraho-

Classical India Khajuraho
Famous for its century old fleet of temple, Khajuraho in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is certainly a paradise for the art lovers. There is no clear evidence about the creation of these buildings, but certainly they also encompass many tales and folklores involving different mythological characters. The entire temple fleet in Khajuraho is studded with erotic scenes and postures sculptured on its walls. Frequently sensual and at times sexually explicit, all the sculptures engraved on these temples presents excellently the refined thoughts of the creator.

Varanasi-

Ganga Aarti - Varanasi
With a history of as old as time, Varanasi in India is the melting pot of life and death. Religion forms one of the most important colors of India and thus Varanasi is the best place to feel this color. The river Ganges, floating aside this holy land of gods and goddesses, create a celestial charm and purifies the soul with the mild lapping of its breeze. Just few kilometers away from Varanasi is the Bodh Gaya, where the all benign Lord Buddha attained the enlightenment of the soul. A visit to Varanasi is certainly a soul purifying journey.

Lucknow-

Classical India Bbara-imam-bara
The city of Nawabs, Lucknow is famous for its delicacy and elegance. In the city of Lucknow you can see the gracefulness of traditions, customs and mannerisms. The city is highly rich with its music and dance, and with highly acclaimed art works. Ruled by the Nawabs for hundreds of years, Lucknow is also one of the best seats of literature education in the country. The scattering of various historical monuments make it one of the best destinations for the tourists and vacationers.

Maharajas Express Completely owned by IRCTC: Delhi HC

Holding that state enterprise Indian Rail Tour Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is the "absolute owner" of luxury tourist train Maharaja Express, Delhi High Court bench comprising of acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Siddharth Mridul set aside its interim order to IRCTC to run this service jointly with Cox & Kings.

The argument put by the Cox & Kings counsel that the worldwide repute earned by the Maharajas Express is due to the marketing effort of the travel agency was set aside by the bench of the court. The bench observed that the fact that the train has earned world wide acclaim and that it is one of the most premier luxury train in the world, though true, does not give Cox & Kings the indefeasible right to run Maharajas Express.

Earlier the train was being operated by the Royale India Tour Ltd (RIRTL), a joint venture between Cox and Kings, India and IRCTC. Whereas the train Maharajas Express was owned by the IRCTC, Cox in Kings was the operator of the rail tours as per the agreement. Recently IRCTC annulled the agreement due to the nonpayment of haulage charge which was contested by Cox and Kings.
Howerver, the bench of the High Court also observed that for bookings made for the train journeys beyond December 2011, IRCTC will take over those bookings from Cox & Kings and will ensure that the train would complete the season, albeit under the supervision of IRCTC to ensure that the third party interest is also not going to suffer.
